The process of applying 18k gold plating to jewellery involves several steps, including the following:
- Cleaning: Before plating, the jewellery must be cleaned thoroughly to remove any dirt, oil, or other impurities that may affect the plating process.
- Preparing the Base Metal: Silver is polished and prepared for plating by applying a layer of a special solution to create a smooth surface.
- Applying the Gold Plating: Once the base metal is prepared, the gold plating solution is applied to the surface of the jewellery using an electroplating process. The jewellery is submerged in the solution, and an electrical current is applied, causing the gold to be deposited onto the surface of the jewellery. The length of time the jewellery is left in the solution and the strength of the electrical current used determine the thickness and quality of the gold plating.
- Finishing: After the gold plating is applied, the jewellery is rinsed, dried, and polished to give it a smooth and lustrous finish.
Firstly, the “k” in “14k” or “16k” refers to the karat weight of the gold used in the plating process. A higher karat weight indicates a higher percentage of pure gold in the plating solution. 18k gold plating contains a higher percentage of pure gold, which means that it is more resistant to tarnishing and fading over time.
Secondly, 18k gold plating is thicker than 14k and 16k gold plating. This means that the layer of gold on the jewellery is more durable and less likely to wear off over time. Thicker plating also means that the jewellery will maintain its luxurious and high-end appearance for longer.
Lastly, 18k gold plating tends to have a richer and more vibrant colour than 14k and 16k gold plating. This is because 18k gold contains a higher percentage of pure gold, which gives it a deeper and more lustrous hue.
